So I'm looking for a package that will go through everything and just pull out media and data files. I have a program that will do this but it also compresses the files into a proprietary archive and takes hours to do it.

I just want something that will look for the files and copy them to a new location maintaining the the directory structure, it would also be nice if this software would come with a preset so I don't have to write a script or insert a bunch of wildcards to tell it what files I want.

Chronosync is a very nice piece of software but it is $40 I believe. It will do anything that you want. Here is the website http://www.econtechnologies.com and no I am not the developer but I bought the software a few years back and like it a lot. There are other options, I believe CarbonCopyCloner will do basic stuff for.

I'll try it, so far I have downloaded about 5 different programs none them do what to me seems like a very simple task.

if you want to get specific with what you back up the best thing is to make use of rysnc. this is the tool that Carbon Copy Cloner is based on. although it really dumbs done rsync making it impossible to get a worthless backup. sure it's a confusing command line incantation but it does allow you to get specific with include / exclude. the good news is once you figure out how to invoke it you can get your files to practically anywhere you can mount a volume: S3, FTP, SFTP, and anything you can mount with FUSE.

the good news is there are lots of tools to help you build the CLI incantation. arRsync for OS X seems as good as any of them. there are lots of other tools for everywhere else. just search for rsync gui

a paid for alternative is Retrospect from EMC. this tool has powerful include/exclude and other filtering rules. however, this app is weird. mostly because it's like 20 year old. it can be as confusing as rsync and if you set up rules incorrectly it will make unusable backups.
