10 Watts is listed in the lower right corner.

Electrical Code isn't complicated but it is complex. the best practice is to not go from memory but look up a specific situation. it's all spelled out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Electrical_Code

lvthunder:It is also against the code to have CAT5 stringed through the ceiling without it being in conduit in commercial buildings.

That's not necessarily true. It depends on where you are. In my area, CAT5, or any phone/data cabling, only requires conduit when going between floors. In the ceiling, you only have to suspend the cabling with anchored hooks so many feet apart. That's specifically to protect firefighters when they pull the ceiling down with their axes.
  3.
code be damned sometimes. the stuff that I have put in place to get something done on the command "just make it happen, I don't want to know how" is kind of remarkable. back in the early days of office networks when it was called AppleTalk before Apple changed the name to LocalTalk we did all kinds of "wrong things" to get a network installed in classrooms and in offices. I got good at doing dry wall drops. that is where you drop wire down a wall to a hole that cut that got a box installed that held a plate for the connector. none of this would have ever been "approved". I've also paid for "professional" installation where the installers did essentially the same thing. 99% of the time none of these cables lived in conduit and were just snaked around the ceiling tile suspension.

if you ask the building owner "hey, we need to run a cable from this floor to that floor" they usually will say "um, that's impossible." so we asked, they said no which doesn't make the need go away. there are lots of ways to get that cable from there to here. you just have to be clever about making it happen. you have to do it in a way so it won't get seen later on. the bottom line is that if it looks like it should be there or even better it looks like it's been there the problem is largely solved. but if you do an installation that looks like "there, I fixed it" it will get seen and then you have problems.

remember that "network" wasn't defined as professional installation 25 years ago. sure, there was phone and cable TV. and while some of that required a license (usually from the city) to install as a "professional" it's amazing to see the janky installations that these people get away with sometimes.

here a rule of thumb. if it's your house and you are doing the install have at it. if it's your commercial building do right the first time. if you're renting a space check with your building manager first before doing it anyway. if the installation is in a government, school or public building it's to code all the way or no way.

Ship date announced, in case you haven't heard:

Woke up this morning and immediately pre-ordered. Within the first few minutes the store was open so I beat the major rush I think. Nothing like the smell of a spent credit card early in the morning. ;)

I'm feeling left out because a bunch of my friends pre-ordered it, but I just can't get interested in the device for some reason.

I got the 32GB WiFi model.

I was thinking about going for the 64GB 3G, but I don't know that I'll fill up that much space (music could, easily, but I don't see the need to put my whole collection on the iPad) and I would like the 3G when I'm traveling, but I don't do that so much that the extra money is really going to be worth it. If figured I'd just get the middle child and if it turns out I need something different upgrade when the next version is released.

Pretty sure that's what I am going to do as well. Not sure if I will pre-order or have the "challenge and excitement" of buying one at my local Apple Store (5 min. away) on release date.

I feel like the iPad is somewhat like the iPhone. I currently have no interest in it, and think it's sorta stupid. But in a month I'm going to really want it, and I won't know why. And then I'll wait for the Gen 2.

I have an 8 Gig iPhone that never seems to be full. but then I'm always rotating stuff in and out of it. a "movie" or "tv show" isn't on there long after it's been watched. music and podcasts are either on randomly or specifically made playlists while the latter is automatically taken care of by iTunes. in fact, I can't remember ever filling it.

but that's using it as remote screen consumption device attached to a desktop. I wonder how it will play as a primary device? it's very possible that the full factor will play heavily here.

thus, the iPad that I ordered was a 16 gig. I also decided to order the case and extra power adapter on a different ticket so it won't hold up shipping.

Jason is the artist. geeky 10-ish year old who loves computers math, sci fi and comics. his older (and taller) brother Peter is a typical jock type. Bill Amend used to draw this daily but retired to a once a week routine. I'm sure he procrastinates it like a pro.

I've got to say, the speed of this thing is pretty impressive. The keyboard isn't bad either. :)

I'm still waiting for my delivery. It's weird that I have an app released for it but have yet to actually use it (sans simulator). Will be interesting to see how my app translates to the bigger screen.

I played with one in the store today. It was heavier than I expected, but was real fast which is nice. I suppose we'll still thumb-type with this thing. I'll probably get one next week, long story, but still making sure it's practical for sales demos.
I'd also like to see some more cases. One with a notepad and place for business cards would be nice.
Well, ilounge has a nice review section here.

The keyboard is something I will have to get used to. I'm starting to "touch" type on it some which isn't like using a full-size keyboard but with the auto-correct it is surprisingly OK.

Turns out I have one small bug due to how the simulator processes device rotations. One line of code later and an update is on the way.

It is called Mad Math for iPad. It's a math flashcard app for kids that supports multiple users and keeps track of progress made on basic facts. It has support for decimal and up to triple digits. Also, to take advantage of the bigger screen, users can draw on the flashcard when the numbers get too big to do in their head.

I must say that the iPad screen makes the graphics look bold and bright even compared to my 13" MacBook Pro.

To give an idea of what had to be fixed; The background image needed to be rotated/swapped out upon orientation changes. Every other piece of rotation logic happens within each views's controller. View controllers only get notified when the orientation changes to Portrait, landscape left, landscape right, or portrait upside down.

The background image is placed behind all the view controllers is replaced/rotated by registering for all orientation changes, which include
the facedown and face up orientations. So my original code looked something like this (pseudocode):

    If( orientation == portrait)
    Background image = portrait
Else if(orientation == portrait upside down)
Background image = portrait upside down
Else if (orientation == landscape right)
    Background image = landscape right
    Else
    Background image = landscape left

So following this logic, when the device senses face up or face down (which turn out to be more often then you'd think) the background image would go to the landscape left image. Annoying unless you switch on the orientation lock.

To fix it, the last else was replaced with:

    Else if(orientation == landscape left)

Now it will essentially ignore face up and facedown notifications. In the next update I'll make it even more efficient by tying the background image orientation to just the view controllers orientation changes rather than having to rely on the devices notifications. *Update: I went ahead and did this*

Wow, Apple has already approved the new version. The update isn't on the store but should be soon.

My battery runtime test is complete. Had to drive 150 miles each way for Easter and the kids where using it to keep them occupied.

Wifi on during the whole time, Bluetooth was OFF, brightness 100% using a Verizion MIFI in the car then switching over to a land based wireless router then back on the MIFI while driving home (had to use an extended battery for the MIFI).

Kids downloading Netflix while playing games, drawing, surfing the net.... Then watching the a movie(s) (or letting the movie run while we eat), downloading apps. The unit was on 98% of the day.

Turned the iPad on at 10am sharp (when we left the driveway) and by 8:33pm, pulling into the driveway, back home, the battery was at 15% and in the red but still going strong. That's 10.5 hours of run time .

I must say I'm impressed with it's run time and now at ease, that it will get me from Orlando to Vegas (with layovers) with one charge and with plenty left in it for any other unscheduled events along the say.

Well, i have had the big thing for about a week and a half. I got it mainly for sales presentations and it is impressive. Some other random thoughts:
It does have this "I'm holding the future" feel to it. It reminds me of when I was first on the Internet.
My ipod touch sure does seem small now.
It's great to lay down on my couch and surf the web. By the end of the day I'm tired of holding a laptop or sitting at a desk.
Not sure what to do with my laptop or where to carry it. I will still need it of course, but not all of the time.
    I like Apple's case.
I have been reading ilounge more. They have some good content, but really need to organize and lay out their site better.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have a Palm Pro and we also run Lotus Notes, so I just use it just for phone, email, text, and now this. I'll open the browser on occasion if I'm desperate, but that's pretty rare.

I thought about that, but I'm afraid to. I use it at work and walk around docks and just know it would get good and scratched. I typically do keep it in my bag though-so its a thought.
Maybe just take it out at night when I'm at home.

having a case on my 3G and 3GS has saved me so many times. I've dropped them, and there's barely a scratch because the case took the brunt of the impact. To each his own, but as accident prone as I am, I consider a case a necessity.
